Harry

I drove for four hours, leaving Rochelle at home with the dogs and Grandma Vicki, because I wasn’t quite ready to tell Uncle Arthur that she was alive. He’d moved out here, well-away from family—away from the world of the supernatural—so that he could live a life of peace. And we were supposed to respect that. He’d come for family gatherings, Christmas, the occasional birthday—like a twenty-first—but other than that, he just wanted to live a very separate, very human life. Bringing the girl here who triggered fifty years of feuding between Dad and his brother would not be honoring that agreement.

When I pulled up in the driveway of his beachfront home, he appeared in the doorway, arms folded. I knew I should have called, and it was a risk that he might be at the hospital if he was on shift tonight, but if I’d let him know I was coming, he’d have said no straight up when I told him why.

“Uncle Arthur.”

“Harry, what brings you to my neck of the woods?”

I ran lazily up the steps and hugged him, noting the humanness of his aging form and how I was now the same height as him. “You look tired, old man.” I clapped both of his arms affectionately.

His smile warmed, that eternal familial connection flaring within his almost-matching eyes. “I am tired. I’ve just spent sixteen hours in surgery.”

“Wow. Tough case?”

“Very. Humans are much harder to fix than vampires,” he remarked. “Now, what brings you here?”

Here goes nothin’. “Mom’s gone missing.”

“I beg your pardon?”

“None of us have seen or heard from her or Dad. Or Uncle Jason.”

Arthur groaned, running his hand over his face, as if to rub away the exhaustion of this life. “Are you concerned that something is afoot?”

“Yes,” I said, holding his gaze so he’d understand the gravity of this next bit. “Arthur… Lily drugged my mom and Jason… about three years ago. And we think, maybe, she found out that Daniel is Jason’s son.”

He understood exactly what I’d wanted to convey. Not just the fact that Lily was known for her temper, and that my family were now missing, but also the fact that Jason had a son. No one could possibly understand more than Arthur what that had meant to my uncle. It meant a lot to me when Elora told me this morning, and I still hadn’t quite stopped celebrating on his behalf.

“Where is the child?”

“Missing too.”

He backed inside. “You had better come in.”
